Girls Thunder Hockey
We’re proud to offer a dedicated girls youth hockey program designed to empower young athletes through the fast-paced, confidence-building world of hockey. Our program focuses on skill development, teamwork, and personal growth, with experienced coaches who understand how to teach and motivate young female players.
We offer age-appropriate training, regular practices, competitive games, and opportunities to participate in local and regional tournaments.
At every level, Thunder Hockey encourages a love of the game, sportsmanship, and the camaraderie that makes hockey so special. We’re committed to growing the girls’ game and giving every player the chance to shine.

Registration Processing Fee
A 3% processing fee is added during registration.
USA Hockey Registration
All youth hockey players must be registered with USA Hockey prior to registering with VAHA. The registration cost varies by age.

Required Fundraisers
To help keep registration costs affordable, VAHA requires each family to participate in key fundraisers:
- Kwik Trip Car Wash Cards: Sell 10 cards (or opt out with a $160 buyout)
- Fun Night Tickets: Required to purchase 2 tickets at $50 each (included at registration)
Other Costs
- Hockey Socks: Must be purchased separately for games
- Equipment: Equipment rental is available as an option for $25 during registration. Rentals do not include skates, gloves, or sticks. If not renting, all equipment must be purchased.
- Team-Specific Costs: Vary by team but may include:
- Tournament entry fees
- Travel expenses
- Coach or team gifts
- Fun Night team basket contribution
These expenses support both individual participation and the overall success of the VAHA program.
When
Our regular hockey season typically runs from late October through the first week of March.
Where
All practices and home games are held at the Viroqua Community Arena, located in Viroqua, Wisconsin. This is our home ice and the central hub for VAHA activities throughout the season.
- The arena features full-sized ice, locker rooms, and seating for families and fans.
- Practice schedules are shared via email before the season begins.
Practices
Practices are typically held 2-3 times per week.
Practice times vary by age group and rink availability, and are primarily held on weekday evenings. Coaches will provide updates as the season progresses.
Games
The number of games can vary depending on the season. A typically season will include between 20-30 games.
Games are primarily scheduled on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), though occasional games may occur on Fridays or during tournaments that span multiple days.
Your team’s full game schedule will be shared by the coach or parent rep and posted online as the season progresses.
Jerseys
Game jerseys are provided by VAHA at no additional cost to families. Each player will receive a set of jerseys for the season, which must be:
- Worn during all games
- Washed and returned at the end of the season in good condition
Note: Players are required to purchase Viroqua Thunder Hockey Socks for games.

What are the volunteer requirements?
Each family is required to contribute 20 volunteer hours per season.
- First-year families are required to complete 10 hours
- Volunteer opportunities include:
- Arena cleaning
- Home tournament staffing
- Facility setup and maintenance
- Fundraising events
- Hours must be logged using the Volunteer Hours Form (available in the arena lobby or on the website)
Families who do not complete their hours will be billed $20 per hour for each unfulfilled hour.
Prefer not to volunteer? You can opt out during registration for a $400 fee.
What equipment does my player need?
All players are required to wear full hockey equipment, including:
- Helmet
- Neck Guard
- Gloves
- Shoulder pads
- Elbow pads
- Breezers (hockey pants)
- Shin guards
- Skates
- Stick
- Practice jersey and hockey socks
Game jerseys are provided, but hockey socks must be purchased separately.
For Learn to Skate participants, only a helmet, gloves, and skates are needed—other gear is included in the program.
Equipment rental is available for $25 (excludes skates, gloves, and stick).
Will my player participate in tournaments?
Yes! Most teams will participate in one or more weekend tournaments during the season, often including travel.
- Tournament costs are typically paid separately by families and may include:
- Entry fees
- Hotel and travel expenses
- Team meals or gifts
Coaches and team parents will provide details as tournaments are scheduled.
