Try Hockey For Free is a one-day opportunity for kids to experience hockey at no cost. No previous hockey or skating experience is needed!
The program is part of a nationwide initiative led by USA Hockey in partnership with the NHL and its member clubs, designed to introduce kids to hockey in a fun, safe, and welcoming environment.

When does the event take place?
Sunday, October 11, 2026
- Girls: 1:30–2:30 PM
- Boys: 3:30–4:30 PM

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Nothing! Try Hockey For Free is completely free.
What if the participant has no hockey or skating experience?
No problem! No previous hockey or skating experience is necessary.
Your child will be on the ice with certified coaches and experienced instructors who are there to make hockey fun, welcoming, and accessible for beginners.
What do we need to bring for equipment?
VAHA will provide the required hockey equipment. Participants are also welcome to bring their own equipment if they have it.
At minimum, participants will need skates, a helmet, and winter gloves. Dress your child in comfortable layers under their equipment—they will warm up quickly once they're on the ice.
Does this event require USA Hockey Registration?
No. A separate USA Hockey membership is not required. During registration, you'll complete a participant waiver that provides USA Hockey coverage for the event.
What if the participant is outside of the 4 to 9 age range?
Try Hockey For Free is primarily designed for kids ages 4–9, but we may be able to accommodate children outside that age range as well. Please contact us with questions.

Had a great time? We'd love to see your player back on the ice!
Learn to Skate is a great next step for new skaters who want to continue building their skills. Players who are ready for a team may be able to move into Thunder Mites based on their age and experience.
